Fall on the Farm
It’s the first of October and we are finally cooling down to nice temps to get farm chores done. The hens are much happier and everyone is working on finishing up molting in prep for the cooler weather.
Marans and a few of the new PBR crew
A spectrum of eggs!
Our new employees are working out nicely and egg production has doubled since our last blog post. The newbies are not laying full sized eggs yet, but they are consistent! The main Plymouth Barred Rock new hen crew has been been busy with a lot of free ranging, and with that, they have gotten crafty with where they decide to lay each day. It has been a literal egg hunt each day to figure out where they put them, but we are hoping to finish their new chickshaw digs soon which will give them better options for a safe place to lay eggs. Our French Black Copper Marans hens have hit the ground running and are adding great color to our egg spectrum.
Tanto and Shoto, livestock guardian cats
The livestock guardian cats are working hard at keeping everyone safe and since there are no real emergencies thanks to our poultry netting, they mainly sleep and dream of being fierce if needed! 😂 We are in talks with them to retrain for their original hired duties which were to include pest control but seemed to take a back seat to activities related to their current position.
Camoflage level- expert!
Our garden area is mainly for personal use, so we are only vending eggs at this time. After getting a bit out of control and overgrown, we are rebuilding our raised beds as we clean out the summer debris in prep for fall plantings. Once we perfect our growing techniques, we hope to have any surplus organic veggies available as well!
Redoing the mess that is the garden after a crazy, too hot summer.
It was a rough summer and our thoughts are with everyone in Western NC as they do the hard work of search, rescue, and eventually rebuilding. Seeing the devastation out west makes us very grateful for all that we have, and a little guilty that we got off so light with Helene. We are no strangers to hurricane damage in eastern NC, so we feel united in helping with the recovery efforts. There are several good programs in place to provide aid and we plan on donating to help with the cause. Sending our deepest condolences to all that lost loved ones and hopes for a quick recovery for all affected!
Happy Fall Y'all!
